Microsoft renames Windows Defender to Microsoft Defender

Microsoft decided to rename the Windows Defender antivirus program to Microsoft Defender.

With this, the corporation wants to show that now it is part of a cross-platform product family.

Historically, Microsoft called its Windows Defender antivirus program. However, with the release of Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) and Microsoft Defender ATP for macOS, the technology giant decided to rename the Windows version of the security solution so that there is a clear understanding – it is a family of products.

Microsoft representatives said that the main task of the re-branding is to show the cross-platform nature of the corporation’s products under the main name “Microsoft Defender”.

«As part of our continued $1B a year investment to deliver a world class security platform for our customers, we are extending Windows Defender ATP capabilities beyond the Windows operating system. As a result, we are renaming to reflect our cross-platform approach to endpoint security», — claims technological giant.

While Microsoft only provided a statement related to their enterprise products, in the Windows 10 Insider build 18941 Microsoft has also changed the name of Windows Defender Antivirus to Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows Defender Exploit Guard to Microsoft Defender Exploit Guard.
